LIBERAL, Kansas — The Cloud County men's basketball team earned its second Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference road win in as many tries Saturday, earning an 88-78 victory over Seward County Community College.
"It was a really good team win," said Cloud County head coach, Chad Eshbaugh. "I thought we had contributions from lots of different people. It was a really quality road win. Seward County is a tough place to play and a tough, well coached team."
Cloud County (6-1 overall, 2-1 KJCCC) was led by freshman guard Deon Lyle as he poured in a career-high 31 points on 9-for-17 shooting, including an economical 8-of-13 from 3-point distance.
Lyle, who went 7-for-10 from beyond the arc on Wednesday against No. 6 Hutchinson Community College, has been nails since the start of KJCCC play. He has averaged 23 points per game through the first three conference versus 10.3 points during the T-Birds' four non-conference games.
"He's such a threat and he makes opposing teams have to guard him," Eshbaugh said. "Even if he's not scoring a ton, he helps other guys get open because he has to be guarded tight."
Lyle's hot shooting helped propel Cloud County out to a 46-33 lead at the half. The T-Birds were able to maintain that lead the entire second half, with Seward County never inching closer than seven the rest of the way.
Joining Lyle in double-figures for the T-Birds was redshirt freshman Jordan McNelly, who tallied a season-high 11 points and 10 rebounds, and sophomore guard Lavar Harewood with 15 points off the bench. Nine of Harewood's 15 point came at the free-throw line (9-for-11).
Up next for the T-Birds will be their final game before Thanksgiving break; an 8 p.m. road contest against Pratt Community College on Tuesday.
