Wednesday’s performance against No. 1 ranked Hutchinson, the defending NJCAA DI National Champions, certainly fit the bill as the T-Birds stunned a packed crowd inside Arley Bryant Gymnasium with an 82-79 overtime upset of the Blue Dragons.

Call it indifference, but the T-Birds won't put much stock into the poll, especially after going 20-11 finishing fourth in the KJCCC standings a season ago. The T-Birds were originally projected to finish in 11th place.

Entering Saturday's matchup with Cloud County Community College, the Red Devils owned an 11-5 home record and had won their last five contests in Iola. The T-Birds snapped that streak Saturday, and improved to 8-6 out on the road this season, with a gritty 79-77 overtime win also gave them a one-game lead over Coffeyville for fourth place in the KJCCC standings with one regular season game remaining.

Hutchinson escaped Concordia with an 80-74 win back on Nov. 16. And in Saturday’s Round 2 battle between the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference rivals, it was again “self-inflicted” wounds that derailed the T-Birds as their upset bid fell short, 84-70.
