    IOLA, Kansas — Defeating the Allen Community College men’s basketball team on its home floor has been a tough task this season for Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference teams. Entering Saturday's matchup with Cloud County Community College, the Red Devils owned an 11-5 home record and had won their last five contests in Iola. The T-Birds snapped that streak Saturday, and improved to 8-6 out on the road this season, with a gritty 79-77 overtime win also gave them a one-game lead over Coffeyville for fourth place in the KJCCC standings with one regular season game remaining.

Back on December 11, it was sophomore guard Deon Lyle who drew a foul on his 3-point, game-tying attempt and made all three free throws to set up a 93-82 overtime win. On Wednesday, it was sophomore Andrew Ballock’s turn to play hero in the T-Birds’ 70-66 road victory.

And in Saturday’s Round 2 battle between the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference rivals, it was again “self-inflicted” wounds that derailed the T-Birds as their upset bid fell short, 84-70.

    CONCORDIA, Kansas — The winter of 1979-1980 was a magical time for the Cloud County Community College men and women’s basketball programs as, for five months, Concordia was home to the best junior college basketball in the state of Kansas. With rosters chock full of some of Cloud County’s all-time greats, the men and women each won their respective Region VI tournaments that season en route to NJCAA National Tournament appearances. Nearly 37 years after their respective runs, the players and coaches behind the T-Birds’ rise to national prominence that season will be honored as the 11th class to be inducted into the Cloud County Athletics Hall of Fame.
