Concordia, KS- Cloud County Women's Basketball has hired a new assistant for the upcoming season. Head Coach Brett Erkenbrack has chosen John Rutherford as his assistant coach.
Rutherford is no stranger to the Jayhawk Conference as he will be coming to Cloud County after spending the previous three years as an assistant at Garden City Community College under Head Coach Nick Salazar. Last year, as the top assistant at Garden City, Rutherford helped the Broncbusters to a 21-10 overall record and a 14-5 conference record. Garden City finished last season in a three way tie for second place in the Jayhawk Conference.
While at Garden City Rutherford aided in the development of seven players that moved on to NCAA Division 1 basketball.
"I am very excited to join the Cloud County family. I am so thankful for the opportunity to learn from one of the best Junior College coaches in the country. Coach Erkenbrack will undoubtedly help me to become a better coach and person. I can't wait to get started," Rutherford said.
A Wichita, Kansas native, Rutherford will bring eight years of basketball coaching experience to Cloud County. Prior to Garden City, he was involved in various levels of men's and women's basketball for the past 8 years. He coached basketball at Wichita Southeast High School as a women's assistant coach. He has also been highly involved in one of the top AAU organizations in Kansas.
The Lady Thunderbirds will kick off the 2016-17 season on November 1st in Arley Bryant Gymnasium as they host Doane College.
