Freshman forward shines in Cloud's 10-1 win over Garden City to open conference play

GARDEN CITY, Kansas — The Cloud County Community College women's soccer team returned to the win column in emphatic fashion on Thursday as the T-Birds earned a dominating 10-1 road victory over Garden City Community College to begin KJCCC West action— the first regular season win for the reactivated program since Sept. 21, 2013 when they defeated Northwest Kansas Technical College, 7-2.

"The women's team is playing really good soccer right now," said Cloud County head coach, James Ross via text message.

Freshman forward Maryamme de Castro highlighted the offensive explosion for the T-Birds (1-1 overall, 1-0 KJCCC West) as she tallied five of the team's 10 goals.

"Maryamme put heself in the right place at the right time," Ross said. "She can finish in front of the net."

Freshman midfielder Katherine Rojas added a pair of goals for the T-Birds as well, while Angie Vergara, Ingrid Castro and Maria Barbosa rounded out Cloud County's scoring with a goal apiece.

The T-Birds put the game away early as they were up 6-0 on the Lady Broncbusters (0-2 overall, 0-1 KJCCC West) at the half.

Cloud will look to build off of Thursday's momentum this Saturday in its home opener against Dodge City Community College. Action is set to get underway at 2 p.m.
