CONCORDIA, Kansas — The Cloud County Community College women's soccer team had its first tough night at the office Saturday as the No. 15 ranked T-Birds suffered their first loss of the season, falling 5-1 to Barton Community College at Harold M. Clark Stadium.
Cloud County (7-1 overall, 5-1 KJCCC West) outshot the visiting Cougars (6-2-1 overall, 5-0-1 KJCCC) by a margin of 21-10, but struggled to crack Barton's goalkeeper, Reyna Gonzalez.
Gonzalez finished with 13 saves, none bigger than a one-on-one for Cloud County's leading goal scorer Izabella Christina with 1:37 remaining in the first half that would have tied the game at 1-1.
Barton was opportunistic in its offensive attack. The Cougars scored quick goals to begin each half, then a pair of quick goals in the 77th and 78th minutes to balloon its lead to 5-1 just nine minutes after the T-Birds had gotten back in the game in the 69th minute on header from sophomore defenseman Ingrid Castro.
Castro's goal was her third of the season and it was assisted by freshman Franciele Cupertino off her free kick attempt.
Cloud County will look to rebound from Saturday's loss when it travels to take on Hutchinson Community College at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
